The Argyll String Quartet presents A Night At The Opera. A concert of Opera classics and Musical Theatre favourites alongside the beautifully talented Scottish Soprano, Helen Lothian. Set in the fantastic surroundings of St. Stephen’s Centre in Stockbridge, the concert will feature everything from Mozart to Bizet and Madame Butterfly to Maria von Trapp. This concert is suitable for all ages, whether you know anything about opera or not!
Four of Scotland’s young professional musicians make up the Argyll String Quartet, founded in 2009 whilst its members were all studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The Quartet has performed all over Scotland and broadcast on BBC Scotland; in 2011 they were the Resident Quartet at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, performing a series of recitals and delivering workshops. In 2012 they were Highly Commended in the Mabel Glover String Quartet Competition and were finalists in the Governor’s Chamber Music Prize in the same year.

They have received coaching from some of the world’s leading Chamber Musicians, notable the Brodsky String Quartet and Peter Manning of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. For five years they were coached by Tamas Fejes, Assistant Leader of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. All highly accomplished orchestral and solo performers, each member of the Argyll String Quartet has been taught by many of Europe’s leading performers and teaching such as Ilya Gringolts, Nicola Benedetti and Igor Ozim.
Helen Lothian is a Scottish based singer who is rapidly gaining recognition as a classical cross over vocalist with great versatility in style and repertoire. As a soloist and graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, extensive experience has been attained with leading orchestra and opera houses including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Touring Opera, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Scottish Opera, Castleward Opera, Garsington Opera and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Her concert and recital appearances have included St. John Smith’s Square, St. Martin in the Fields, the Royal Opera House Crush Bar, Horsham Music Circle, Covent Garden Festival, Cunard Opera Cruises, Fairfields Hall, St. James Palace and Chequers. Helen has recorded for Classic FM and Radio 3 and has performed extensively in opera, oratorio, recital and light music.
St. Stephen’s Centre is an excellent example of 19th Century Scottish architecture, designed by William Henry Playfair in 1827. It houses a beautiful, original Father Willis Organ and is an excellent venue for experiencing live classical music.
