India Place Allotments
When India Place Allotments opened it was Edinburgh’s first fully organic raised beds allotment site. The official handover of the site and grand opening of the hut took place on Saturday 25th May of 2013 with a community barbecue and opening party.
The allotments are located at the end of India Place in the Edinburgh neighbourhood of Stockbridge. There are twenty two raised beds, some of which are shared as half-plots and the gardens have facilities for water supply and waste collection. Almost all the plot holders are newcomers to organic growing and gardening in general.

Tenements once ran the length of India Place but were demolished in 1961. Now the former tenement coal bunkers act as small tool sheds for plot holders and the site is busy with activity.
The allotments organise open days and organic gardening classes throughout the seasons, and hope to fully regenerate this small slice of Stockbridge by the Water of Leith that for over 30 years was an unsightly waste ground.
The hut was designed by Edinburgh’s Sutherland Hussey Architects, a RIBA Award winning practice now building a world-wide reputation for innovative, sustainable design. Recent projects include a new park and associated buildings to transform Berlin’s famous Templehof Airport, An Turas Ferry Shelter on Tiree and The Yan, a stunning community centre dedicated to sustainability and conservation in Grizedale Forrest, Cumbria.
The hut has been designed as an indoor and outdoor meeting area and will seat sixteen inside with additional storage at the back. It will provide a focal point for the plot holders, their families and the wider community by providing a space to meet, discuss and promote organic gardening, eco-education for children and environmental sustainability. And to provide shelter from the rain and the odd cup of tea…
