Star Diminish is an exhibition of the artist Max Boyla as his work transitions in method and style over the period of a year. The exhibition at Patriothall Gallery in Stockbridge will run until November 17 and is Free to attend.
The work was made whilst studying remotely on London’s Turps Banana Correspondence Course from his studio at Rhubaba, in Edinburgh 2018-19. In these paintings; existential aspirations are explored through absurdist logic, utilising paint as a catalyst.
Boyla translates Kubrick-esque ideas of a celestial afterlife, exploring the concepts of infinity and where the human soul might fit into the significant insignificance of existence.
Max Boyla graduated with first class BA Hons in contemporary fine art painting from Gray’s School of Art in 2014. After travelling South East Asia and Australia for a year, he returned to Scotland to pursue his art practice.
In 2018 he was funded by Creative Scotland to develop his painting practice with the alternative London art school Turps Banana, on their Correspondence Course 2018-19. He has recently enrolled on the funded, three year Postgraduate Programme at the Royal Academy of Art in London.

Patriothall Gallery is an artist-led initiative in the heart of Edinburgh, which aims to provide professional exhibition opportunities for artists. There are also over 50 artists’ studios in the building. Studio artists exhibit in the gallery, however submissions are invited from any non Patriothall studio artist as well.
The Gallery is located within the WASPS Studios building in the Stockbridge area of the city, and has over a 25 year history provided exhibiting opportunities for hundreds of emerging and mid-career visual artists.
