With the encouragement of the City of Edinburgh Council the Stockbridge and Inverleith Community Council are currently in the planning stages of organising a traffic free day on Raeburn Place as a way of encouraging local residents and visitors to enjoy this popular street traffic free for one day. The weekend of the Summer Solstice, Sunday 23rd June, 2019 has been identified as a day when Raeburn place could be closed to all but emergency traffic from Leslie Place to Portgower Place.
The intent is that this event will give the local community a safe, feel-good day, put Raeburn Place on the city map as a fun, welcoming street and bring visitors into Stockbridge and there by raise awareness of the great shops and services
It is expected that this event may involve some or all of the following elements:
• fun, safe family activities and play opportunities
• bunting / picnic areas / café tables
• information / advice stalls from local organisations
• live music
• participation of the schools, both primary and secondary, in the area.
It is understood that there may be concerns and both councils are trying to find reasonable ways of allaying these: Parking for residents – For one day only, vehicles will be banned between Leslie Place and Portgower Place between 10am and 5pm. A TTRO process (temporary traffic regulation order) will give local residents notice that parking is not allowed at set times. This will be well publicised in advance.
Residents will be expected to remove cars to nearby streets although we may also be able to identify some alternative sites for residents on the day.
Parking for visitors – promotional materials will encourage visitors to ‘leave their cars at home and travel on foot, by bike or by bus’ to enjoy Stockbridge at its best. It is hoped that longer term behaviour change might be achieved.
