Not long opened in Stockbridge is Wendys Ice Creams, a long overdue addition to the area. Having recently relocated from the north east of Scotland, when deciding which ice cream supplier to stock, owner Wendy Davidson was in no doubt that it had to be the delightfully smooth selection from Simpsons of Buckie. Simpsons of Buckie is a family business with all products made by hand using ingredients local to Buckie and no hydrogenated fats or other oils, giving the ice cream a dreamy, creamy taste.
With over 20 flavours on offer in the shop at any one time, there’s always something to suit everyone. Popular flavours since opening include Chocolate and Cinnamon, Scottish Tablet and Turkish Delight ice creams. Adults are always drawn to the Prosecco Bellini and Rhubarb and Edinburgh Gin sorbets, both seasonal specials. Simpsons make many more flavours and Wendy is always keen for feedback on new flavours customers would like to try – currently on the “waiting list” are Irn Bru and Cappuccino!
Wendys also stocks a carefully chosen selection of artisan chocolates, candles, cards and cakes, all from small Scottish makers, with coffees, teas and hot chocolate for those who find the thought of ice cream too much in the colder weather.
Principally a takeaway with ample room for buggies and pushchairs, a couple of strategically placed sit in facilities and a superbly cool window seat are available for those who want to sit and savour the flavour!
The feedback in the first week has been excellent with the residents of Stockbridge loving having their own ice cream shop, especially the lovely parents and children of Stockbridge Primary and Edinburgh Academy, the shop’s “next door neighbours”. But no matter who enters the shop, I’m always greeted by a huge smile – ice cream never fails to bring a positive response, even on a wet winter’s day! Also, being so close to the Water of Leith, Wendy’s is a member of Dugs ‘n Pubs, with water bowl and biscuits available for your 4 legged friends.
