Under The Wing is an art project dedicated to unlocking the nurturing and healing power of art, helping women and children who are survivors of domestic abuse. They offer free and subsidised art classes and paid workshops.
Based in the Edinburgh neighbourhood of Powderhall, each class lasts 90 minutes and have space for 8 women. These classes focus on bringing a sense of fun and creativity back into their lives, as so often women trying to work their way through or past domestic abuse lose sight of the basics in life – having fun. Under The Wing aim to restore that by providing a safe space for nurturing and healing, alongside imagination and enjoyment.

Paid workshops are held weekly for the general public with a “pay it forward” model to fund classes for women and children in Edinburgh who have been affected by domestic abuse. All the proceeds of paid classes go towards making the free workshops a reality.
At Under The Wing, they believe in the importance of community, creativity, and of finding time for yourself to let your hair down and find that spark of joy through art. This what the classes are all about, as domestic abuse can take a tremendous toll on a person. Having to navigate through the trauma and obstacles that come with that, they want to help people find relief from that.

In order to restore that balance, the classes give people a space to put the focus back on themselves, to discover something that will make their lives brighter, alongside people who understand what they’ve been through. Art is about the creation of something unique, the exploration of what matters to you, and about enjoying the world we have. And that is something we should all be able to share in.

Under the Wing needs funds to cover the cost of art equipment, rent, tutors and more. All monies which they receive and those which they generate go towards ensuring the sustainability of the project for the benefit of all the women and children enrolled in their classes. The funding they receive, and your donations will allow them to continue to provide free art classes and materials and will make a difference to more women and children who are living with the effects of domestic abuse.
